Specialist Family Violence Court Report
Last year we saw increased cooperation between the Specialist Family Violence Court in Ballarat, Victoria Legal Aid and BGCLS. This followed both the commencement of the Specialist Family Violence Court and the need for a change in service delivery as a result of COVID-19. This cooperation has continued and has meant that BGCLS proactively call to book consults with clients prior to family violence court hearings when parties have contacted the court and requested assistance or through referrals from Victoria Legal Aid.
One of the objectives of the Specialist Family Violence funding was to achieve greater continuity for clients. The changes that have been made has ensured clients in most cases receive advice and representation from the same lawyer with respect to their family violence matters, and this is also often achieved at subsequent court hearings. This coming year we hope again to continue to build on this, and to continue to improve the experiences of our clients with less disruptions caused by COVID-19
